An intro to Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM)

Hello! I’m here to tell you a little bit about Unifii’s Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) practice. But first let me briefly introduce myself. My name is Maarten de Heij and I’m a Principal Consultant and the SPM Practice Lead at Unifii.

My first SPM implementation (still comfortably called ITBM back then, which stood for IT Business Management) was back in 2017 and it has been my main area of expertise ever since. I love talking about it, so please do grab me on LinkedIn if you’re up for a chat!

In a nutshell, Strategic Portfolio Management in ServiceNow is a product suite which helps customers track the lifecycle of their products and services. This is done by providing structured and governed ways to capture new initiatives and assess, prioritise and ultimately deliver them, all while being in full control of financials, risks, resources and timelines. Seamlessly integrating with other product suites such as ITSM and CSM, and strongly aligned with ServiceNow’s best practice data model CSDM, Strategic Portfolio Management plays an unmistakeable part in an organisation’s value streams.

So what exactly do we do within the practice? Well, our take on SPM has three main focal points:

Sales and marketing

  • Supporting customer engagements by facilitating product demos, performing readiness assessments and putting together roadmaps.

  • Refining statements of work by reviewing scope, resourcing and proposed project plans.

  • Creating content such as social media and blog posts, videos and case studies.

  • Building a library of reusable artefacts which accelerate delivery, like standard data load sheets and common quick-win update sets.

  • Providing specialist and architectural support to ongoing deliveries.

  • Engaging with our friends at ServiceNow to make sure our team is up to scratch with the latest on features and functionality - including all the scoops on what's coming in future releases.

  • Reviewing lessons learned from projects and ensuring the wider team can benefit from these for future deliveries.

  • Hosting training sessions (open to all staff) to learn about the SPM product suite and insights into ongoing work we’re doing for our customers.

All of this keeps us pretty busy next to our day jobs of delivering SPM for all of our wonderful customers.

But why choose Unifii for your SPM implementation?

  • We know what good looks like. As a ServiceNow preferred partner for SPM, it’s arguably our bread and butter. We have implemented SPM across various sectors and industries, providing us with years of crucial experience.

  • We know what it’s like to be in the customers’ shoes; not only do we deliver all our projects with 100% permanent staff, but a large part of our workforce is made up of ex-client-side people. Thanks to being on that side of the story and therefore truly understand enterprise delivery.

  • We recognise what real value is. We are here to help you navigate all the pitfalls and focus on getting the most out of your implementation, with no quick fixes and a focus on a long-term partnership.
